Gecko Smell

I'm having a problem with one of my geckos. I purchased my first gecko about two months ago, and recently, my friend, who bought a gecko around the same time, conveyed to me that they were no longer able to care for her. My leopard geckos are both female, but the newer gecko has a distinctive odor. It doesn't smell bad, but it smells strong. Since both geckos had a period of isolation, I saw no problem with keeping them in the same tank. They are both healthy in appearance, and very lively. But I have to wonder, is a strong scent normal for a leopard gecko?

None of mine really smell unless theyve just pooped one its dried theres virtually no smell. Strong smelling feces can be a sign of parasites. How long did you have the new gecko quarantined from yours? If it continues or she starts to drop weight having the vet do a fecal may be a good idea.

Thats not a for sure thing just one thing that can cause smelly poops. Is it the gecko herself that smells or the poo? I usually quarantine for 90 days, if you do suspect parasites though separate them until you can get a fecal done.

It's just the poo! She has a very good appetite and is growing well, though she is still a bit underweight from her previous owner. I wonder if it couldn't have something to do with stress? She is a bit anxious, and used to hiss when handled.

It could be I would keep them separate for the time being if at all possible just in case. If it is stress being housed with another gecko can make her stress even more and if it continues to be a problem, especially if shes not gaining weight after youve had her for a while have the vet run a fecal for parasites.

I have a vet appointment scheduled for the Monday after Christmas! I've separated the lizards so we'll see what happens. I also spoke to the previous owner of the gecko and she said that she never noticed a smell, but I'll take both lizards in for a check up to be safe. Thank you so much for your help!

Good news! Norman was okay! He was stressed, but not sick! I'm happy to announce that both the kiddos are happy and healthy! Plus, now that I'm working on new 'stress reduction' techniques, the smell is gone!
