I bought my gecko at a large corporate pet store about a week ago. He/she has been doing great and eating well, no problems. I was just curious, at what age do these pet stores usually sell they're baby geckos at? I guess they could be all different ages depending on when someone buys one. I was just curious how old mine might be. He's small, definitely a baby, and I asked what the sex may be but she said they are too young to be sexed. He's only about 3-4 inches long. At what age can you usually sex them? I'm really hoping it's a female because I would like to get another one :D !

sometimes you can tell the sex at an early age but in most cases you will have to wait and see what sex they are i think once they are about a year old you can tell. Congrats on the new gecko!!! :D

I think you can usually tell a Leo's sex by around 5-6 months of age? Perhaps earlier (especially if it's a male and very well defined)?

I got both of my leos from Petco and I have no clue how old they were, but both were around 3" when I got them. I was told that they were probably 4 weeks old.

My first is now approx 11 mo old (I got her in October of last year) and is doing awesome. I found out she was a female last month when I started researching how to tell.

My second I just got a week ago, so he's probably est around 5 weeks old? He's still only about 4" long. No clue on gender yet.

Can you tell, if it's a male for example...do the males have the distinct dark "V" at a very young age? hmmm I already looked at my little guy but didn't see anything, I think it's way too early.

Ok. I figured it was too early to tell, I'm just loving this one so much that I want another! I just don't want to have to buy a whole other cage and whatnot to house another one in until I find out what mine is now. I'd rather just wait and see if mine's a female, and if so, I'll purchase another one :D !

Thanks for the help!

Well, I think you just have to wait and see. Most males don't have the "V" clearly when they are babies, you might see the "bulges" at the base of the tail but some are really difficult to sex. Either way, the juveniles should be alone as they grow, no competition from cagemates, so you should wait until it is fully grown before you get another one, if you don't want to get another cage. And then you can't buy a juvie and put it with the older one, you have to get one of the same size. But as you should quarantine every new gecko you will have to get some sort of temporal setup/cage for a month or so... And think about why you want a second. The gecko have no need for cagemates or company. Most geckos will even be better off alone. Something to think about... But congrats one having bought your first gecko! They are wonderful and interesting animals and you will have great times together!

WEll I know that if I do get another one I will have to house him separately for a while and that they both have to be about the same size. I figure that by the time my baby now grows up I will get him a new 20 gallon tank rather than keep him in his current 10 gallon one. And that way I could use the 10 gallon to house my new gecko in, if I chose to get another. Thanks again!
