It is a species thing. If they drop their tail, it will never regrow. So once it's gone, it's gone forever. It's really not unusual for something to happen to the tail either, so a lot are missing them. Allegedly, from what I have heard from people who have seen cresteds in the wild, adult cresteds in the wild don't have tails.
