Hey everyone! Just trying to seek some insight on how crested geckos interact, as the information I've been reading kind of sways and I have no experience in the matter. Suppose I'll start with the history.
I had the female for about a year and she did wonderful in the 75gal habitat. I then received a hatchling (turned out to be male:main_thumbsup and instead of creating a whole new environment (humidity, temperature and lightning are all automated), I put a smaller enclosure inside the 75gal one. I've gradually increased the size of the inner habitat over the last two years until now.
So fast forward and the female’s approximately 3 years and he's about 2. I heeded the advice I was given and completely cleaned and rearranged the enclosure before placing them together. Their first meeting went like so: The male started barking at the female loudly and she ran up to him. They both bit each other’s neck and held on for about 10 seconds. They then released and I caught everything after that on the video link below. After that they had a staring contest for about 30 minutes, then the female licked the male's head and proceeded to actually step all over him for 10 minutes. Then they parted ways. When the enclosure switched to red light they approached each other again but no aggression. They bumped into each other several times throughout the night but I didn't notice any other scraps.
Basically what I’m asking is would you guess this is a dominance or mating interaction or merely how most geckos meet for the first time? I've never had them together without some sort of barrier before. The female is a bit larger than the male, as you can see. I appreciate any advice or experience you can share with me! If I’ve left any important details out just let me know & I’ll respond as soon as I can. Thank you!!
