Has anyone used a GEO? I was thinking about getting one when i breed. I just wanted to know if anyone has a great experience with them and if they are "must have" for gecko breeding.
I just ordered the hat trick three pack. I'd comment on how they work, but I'm still waiting for it. Order a month before you plan on having eggs. The idea seems good. It keeps the eggs from the direct moisture contact. There is another type out there that is square instead of round. I'm ordering it too. It's called a "SIM". Seems better than a circle because you can fit more eggs. Twenty dollars for the GEO is worth a shot.
I'm using a five-pack, although only one is currently housing eggs because temperature fluctuations due to weather seem to have been throwing off most of my females. I used to use moss and then started using fiber, but I switched to the GEO for visual cleanliness and little else. I don't expect better/worse/other hatch rates or anything like that. It's just a matter of arbitrary preference.
Very few things qualify as "must have" items. These are just nice to have.
I have made my own "free" version with pipette tip boxes and grids before, but I'd rather pay someone else for the product at this point than construct them myself.
I've got some eggs cooking in GEO's. So far one hatched, at 43 days. The other from that clutch was a dud from the start. The thing I really like about the GEO is the indented nest for the egg which keeps it from rolling, even if a baby climbs all over before both eggs hatch. I haven't tried a SIM yet, but the concept is great. We have a lot of snake eggs in bigger containers in the incubators too so deli cup size works better for me. Hopefully all my girls will start laying like they should and I will wish I had gotten more than the 5 pack! Prior to this I was putting one or two clutches in an 8oz deli.
I just hatched my first GEO clutch Monday and am very pleased with the results. Babies came out on day 40 at 88 degrees, fully formed with no yolk sack in sight. The eggs dont roll around at all, but I only had two so I moved each egg to its own chamber a few days before hatching to make some extra space for each baby. I'm using a SIM for my female incubator this year, which is a little bigger. I don't have as many eggs in the male one though, so the GEO is perfect. I am def happy with the GEO (one was only $5), either is a great investment.
To update, I have a few more clutches incubating in GEOs. I will update again in time. I don't expect to see any drastic differences between this and my typical method, but I like the cleanliness.
I am waiting to see if the newer and larger SIM that is supposed to come out is put on the market by when I will have use of it this summer for another species, too.
