Ok so I want to get my first leo tommarow. Heres what Im not sure about though. I dont have the tank or heater or any of that yet. So if I got the leo and got the tank and heater at the same time with everything else I need, could I go home set everything up and the leo be ok durring the time it takes for the heater to get the tank to the right temp? Also I have been told that I should feed an adult 8 crickets a day, and I have been told to do that every 2-3 days. So how should I feed? thanks

Ideally, you would want the setup completed, turned on, and working correctly (temperature regulated). The leopard gecko is already going to be stressed out, it's much easier for them to go right into their new home.

As far as feeding, a lot of leos will not eat when placed in their new homes for a few days. You can definitely offer him/her food. I would let them eat as much as they want for a half hour or so.

Read the various posts

That is exactly what I did. Got the Leo and set up the tank. Yes, eventually the tank will heat up so you will be ok.

Well she was probably stressed but, it worked out OK.

Crickets ... well that depends.

A JV every day.

An Adult every other day 5 to 8 (3/4 to Adult crickets). Dustem too.

I feed on Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays.

No food on Monday.

Get the crickets, gutload them and offer a couple of them on day two and see what happens.

ok well with christmas comming soon and all Im worried that the leo will get gone. The store only has that one that is the size I want, so I want to get her as soon as I can. Should I risk her getting gone to make have everything set-up? I mean if you think I should then I will but I dont want her to get gone, and just the 3 times Ive been in there Ive seen atleast 8 people handle her and say they might come back for her.

Sorry didnt see the last post. Well I think I might do that with her I know that I deffiantly want to get this one.

I agree with Heather when I receieved Lana her tank had been running for two days because it takes forever to regulate that heater. Even when she came I was still having trouble with the temp going back and forth and I had a rhethostat.

BUT if you NEED to buy her and all your supplies at the same time look through the supply section to make sure you have everything you need then pick out your gecko then run home and set it up.

Do you have a list of everything you need? If you had more time to spare you could have probably bought all your supplies online at a much cheaper price like I did.

Can't you ask them if they can hold her? Like you pay for her or pay a percentage until you get eveything ready? and have you checked her over to see if she "seems" healthy. I'm sorry to say that many petshops do not take care of their geckos very well and you don't want to get stuck with a sick gecko

If you're that worried than go ahead and get her. Yes it may stress her out a little bit, but in the long run it will be fine. I bought my leo and the stuff at the same time and everything turned out just fine. As far as crickets go you should really allow them to eat as many crickets as the would like within a certain time period. Leos rarely ever over eat and when the do and they regurgitate that learn there lesson and usually dont do it again. Adults can be feed every 2-3 days as long as you allow them to eat until they are full.

Oh and about the feeding question I don't feed crickets because i hate them, lol

But I have an adult female gecko that i feed 10-12 mealworms everynight and that seems to be working just fine. The past few days she ate 2-4 roaches plus 10 mealworms each feeding ( i know she's a pig! )

ok thanks for all the help. The guy that Im getting her from knows his stuff. He owns the petshop and is the only one working there. His first gecko was a leo and he has had them since he was like 15. So i feel safe with getting this leo even though she is comming from a petshop.

Please be carefull, there are some people that work in pet shops and claim to be experts and they end up selling you heat lamps, sand, and large crickets for a hatchling. There's tons of info on this forum for proper set ups please take a little bit of time to research and make a list.:main_thumbsup:

you at least have to have two hides but three is better. One on the hot side, a moist hide, and one on the cool side. you did forget a dish for mealworms if you are going to feed mealworms and a dish for the calcium and you need to get calcium powder that has D3 in it.

Well I was planning on going with crickets and dusting them. Do I still need a calcium bowl if I am dusting the crickets? And for a moist hide can i just get a tubbaware container and cut a hole in the top and put like paper towels in it and spray them daily? Or is the moss essential?

it is suggested that you always keep a little bit of PURE calcium in a dish. Yes you can use a tupperware with a hole and some paper towels, that is exactly what I use right now. Just make sure that edges of the hole aren't jagged.

Ok cool thanks again for all the help. What I did was the call Geoff, the guy at the petshop, and tell him Id be in today to get her. I went and got the cage and evertyhing else where because it was cheaper. So i gave the tank 3 hours to heat up before I got her. Its sittin pretty steady on 93 F. I just got back from picking up the leo not sure on a name yet. but thanks again for everything

Be Careful

I agree that you should be careful.

Look at some of the caresheets and the information on this forum. Then, make sure that you have all of the stuff that is needed.

UTH, water dish, food dish, calcium dish, cool hide, warm hide, moist hide, therometer, and what everelse.

Then, make sure that you have calcium plus D-3 and/or multivitiam to dust your insects.

Then, you need decide what you will feed your Leo ... crickets & mealworms and/or whatever.
