Giant Mealworm vs Mealworm

Well just been searching google about mealworms and apparently I found out that giant mealworm and mealworms are like 2 different bugs. They said that a giant mealworm is like a mealworm with steriods. Could I still feed my leopard geckos giant mealworms or stick with mealworms?

I have fed giant mealworms for years with no problems, just recently making the switch to super worms. I think what it comes down to is that they are safe as a feeder, but if they morph into a beetle, they are sterile, so breeding does not happen. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

For a Giant it is if?

They give a regular mealworm hormones which cause the larva to continue to grow and to not pupate and thus it becomes a Giant Mealworm.

So a "Giant" Mealworm is a little larger than a normal mealworm.:main_yes:

So if they do pupate then, I would think that they would be steril.

Now a Super Mealworm is a different "bug".:main_thumbsup:


But some people use regular, Giants or Supers or they just mixem up.

It is all up to you and I have not heard anything "bad" about Giants.

My problems with the Giants is the fact that they give them hormones to get as big as they are. Is that good for your gecko? I dont know. But I dont have to worry about hormones with the mealies that I raise myself. or from the roaches either for that matter.

Today I went to the petstore and asked for GIANT MEALWORMS. The lady comes to me and shows me superworms. I told her that they were different, but then she says they are the same. I walked away. Is it hard to find Giant Mealworms? Im gonna check another petstore.
