Good Book?

Hey all,

New to the gecko world here. Rescued one from a family member yesterday. I'm in need of a starting point, other than this great forum, to get us on the right track. The first thing I read today is that the $40 we spent on sand last night was a waste and a risk to the animal's life! Can't be worse than the sand she was in prior to that. Although, it was so caked up in moisture and waste that she may not have been able to ingest it. Either way, don't need my house smelling like a cat litter box, which is what her tank smelled like yesterday.

Back to my point. I would like a good book to get me started. We've been keeping salt water coral and fish for years, if this thing is harder than that, I will be shocked! There's just no way! I know forums are packed with opinions. Opinions are great! I do want to get some basic facts out of the way, definitions (what the hell is a humid hide and how do I create one), etc. Doesn't need to be an encyclopedia, short and sweet will work well to start. I just don't wanna kill the lil girl while learning about how to take great care of her!

Thanks for all your suggestions!

PS- as a bonus question; can I just use slate tiles cut to fit the bottom of the tank? Doesn't slate absorb moisture (wastes)? We now return to my perusing for answers! Thanks again!

Slate is a great substrate for the bottom of leo tanks. You may need to put a bit of play sand underneath it to help with the conduction of the heat from your UTH - sometimes a bunch of the heat gets lost in the air space if you don't.

As for books, Ron Tremper has two great books out there. The Herpetoculture of Leopard Geckos (2005) and Leopard Geckos: The next Generation (2012). The first book may be out of print and hard to find.
