A friend contacted me about 2 weeks ago he is needing to find someone to take over his Gecko breeding collection. He can't give them the time they need right now so we worked out a deal and took them over. My friend has been breeding geckos for a few years and it is sad to see him get out of the hobby, but with his work changing he knew it was just a matter of time before they started to suffer. I picked everything up last week it did take two loads in my truck to get it all.
In all I got 13 geckos ranging from 2 grams to 120 grams(3 adults, 3 hatch lings and 7 juveniles) , 3 rack systems with tape, tubs for everyone, lots of extra stuff like hides dishes and calcium. My plan was to take his racks down and just move everything to my house and set it back up, that failed right from the start. When I was loading the stuff I knew I would have to take some time to check the wiring because it didn't look right. I had to take his rack system and fully rebuild the electrical wiring so it would be safe and heat the tubs even. Then I spent hours cleaning everything and making sure all their basic needs where care for. While I was cleaning I could tell I would have to upgrade his moist hides and a few other things to bring them up to my standard. So I did that while I was setting the tubs back up, I have 16-20 hours in getting everything set back up. That was a lot more then I was planning and I really didn't have time to do all that but it had to be done for the geckos.
After all that was done I got to spend some time enjoying the new geckos. I'm very happy I got everyone and they are all doing well, my friend did tell me one gecko had some deformed front legs and she needed some extra care. That isn't a big deal and I don't mind the extra work with her. It took a few days but everyone is eating now and making a nice mess for me to clean. My schedule is to feed in the morning before work and spot clean in the evening, plus once a week full tank cleaning. Good news is that I should be able to keep doing just that, I have to get up a few mins earlier but not a problem.
I have to say I'm glad I got the geckos I could tell the care was starting to slip but I got them in time so no harm done that I can tell. But I way under estimated the size of this project, I will have to think very hard before I would do it again.... Who am I kidding I would do it again in a heart beat.
I will be getting some photos in the next few weeks, I'm still updating my paper work and that is taking a while.
