Would this work as a substrate?

Hi, I'm new to this site and I was reading how actual sand is harmful to leopard geckos, and other things like paper towel and newspaper don't look natural, and was thinking of ways to get a natural thing without the risk of them eating it, and thought of an idea. How about if I got something like cardboard, and covered the top of it with glue or silicone, and then poured sand on it and when it's dry pour off the excess sand? Just an idea. Thanks for reading.
