To start off, I usually order all my mealworms from Flukers when I need to "re-stock" my colony, which I have ALWAYS been pleased with. Flukers is more expensive though, and since Grubco was cheaper, I decided to try them for a spin, after reading several posts recommending this company. Last week, I ordered 3,000ct of mealworms from Grubco... Well, I was not at ALL pleased with my order. The part I WAS pleased with, though, was the rate of shipping. I ordered my worms on Sunday night, I received an email saying they were shipped out Monday, and they were delivered Wednesday afternoon. The worms were packed in individual 1,000ct (nylon?)bags, in a box stating live bait and the usual holes and such.
ANYWAYS, what really disappointed me was the quality of the worms. Every bag i opened had worms that looked very thin, and dark colored. Some were hardly moving, but all but maybe a handful out of all 3,000 were alive. They looked like they hadn't been on food or anything for a few weeks, instead of three days.
Also, when i dumped the mealworms into the container, it gave me the impression they hadn't been kept in a clean environment. There were probably twice as many mealworm skins in each bag then there was actual worms. I threw out at least four or five cups of it. Mealworms shouldn't be able to shed that much in a time period of three days!
Finally, ever since I got the order, EVERY DAY I've been pulling out at least a handful or two of dead worms, and I have never had this problem with Flukers worms. Now, mind you, I've been raising my own mealworms for 5 or 6 years now(with occasional re-stocking orders as stated before) on oatmeal and a little bit of blended grains, with carrots as "moisture". I also throw in the dried up mustard greens that my bearded dragons don't eat, for some added nutrition. With my method, I have hardly ever had many dead worms. Maybe a handful once a month, but thats it. My worms stay alive and well taken care of, and so do my beetles. I've also found a few of these in the order, and I've never had these before either... What are they?
Has anyone else ever had this problem with Grubco worms? Even though they're more expensive, I think I'm sticking with Flukers from now on. Grubco was a waste of my money and the quality sucked :main_thumbsdown:.
