To start off, I usually order all my mealworms from Flukers when I need to "re-stock" my colony, which I have ALWAYS been pleased with. Flukers is more expensive though, and since Grubco was cheaper, I decided to try them for a spin, after reading several posts recommending this company. Last week, I ordered 3,000ct of mealworms from Grubco... Well, I was not at ALL pleased with my order. The part I WAS pleased with, though, was the rate of shipping. I ordered my worms on Sunday night, I received an email saying they were shipped out Monday, and they were delivered Wednesday afternoon. The worms were packed in individual 1,000ct (nylon?)bags, in a box stating live bait and the usual holes and such.

ANYWAYS, what really disappointed me was the quality of the worms. Every bag i opened had worms that looked very thin, and dark colored. Some were hardly moving, but all but maybe a handful out of all 3,000 were alive. They looked like they hadn't been on food or anything for a few weeks, instead of three days.

Also, when i dumped the mealworms into the container, it gave me the impression they hadn't been kept in a clean environment. There were probably twice as many mealworm skins in each bag then there was actual worms. I threw out at least four or five cups of it. Mealworms shouldn't be able to shed that much in a time period of three days!

Finally, ever since I got the order, EVERY DAY I've been pulling out at least a handful or two of dead worms, and I have never had this problem with Flukers worms. Now, mind you, I've been raising my own mealworms for 5 or 6 years now(with occasional re-stocking orders as stated before) on oatmeal and a little bit of blended grains, with carrots as "moisture". I also throw in the dried up mustard greens that my bearded dragons don't eat, for some added nutrition. With my method, I have hardly ever had many dead worms. Maybe a handful once a month, but thats it. My worms stay alive and well taken care of, and so do my beetles. I've also found a few of these in the order, and I've never had these before either... What are they?

Has anyone else ever had this problem with Grubco worms? Even though they're more expensive, I think I'm sticking with Flukers from now on. Grubco was a waste of my money and the quality sucked :main_thumbsdown:.

Correction: All of my worms were alive upon delivery except for roughly a handful* That was phrased weird in the OP.

Wow that sounds like they were kept in bags for a while before shipping. Sorry they were so icky!

That little fuzzy guy looks like a dermestid beetle larvae. Some big breeders keep them with mealworks to eat fecal matter and dead worms. Not sure about all kinds but I know some kinds of dermestids are used to clean skeletons and can ruin a collection of mounted animals or leather.

That's what I'm thinking, that they keep or kept them in bags for a while, or at least not in a very clean environment with lack of food and nutrition. Needless to say, I'm never purchasing worms from them again.

If its dermestid beetle larvae and there may still be a few more in my colony, will it ruin it? Or will it be okay as long as I pull them out as soon as i find them?(I haven't found anymore...lets hope i don't at all)

Hmm from what I gathered from the internet, some large distributors keep them purposefully in with crickets as they eat the waste and keep the smell down. They do kill some younger crickets but they help more than they hurt. I bet they container hopped into the mealworms at Grubco. I bet it would work the same with mealworms. I personally would want to try to get rid of them but I bet they'll only be able to kill and eat small mealworms and that shouldn't be enough to ruin it.

Thank you so much for the information :) If I see any more, I'll squish and throw them out just to be on the safe side. Who knows, I don't want to take any chances/ Thanks again :)

I am just not sure what has happened to Grubco. Something has changed. I ordered from them for a long time with no imperfections. And then one order got messed up and then the vice president was completely rude to me. They also do not notify when there is a backorder. Something has changed with them

No management has not changed. This is the busiest time of the year for them since so many people have lots of babies to feed. Instead of being mad that they are so busy they should appreciate and try to help all of their loyal customers. I have not done business with them since.
