this may seem like a stupid question but is it necessary to use the cricket quench gel stuff? can i just use potato or carrot? is there something else i can use?
This is just from my personal experience, but the cricket quench and other gels don't make much of a difference in cricket survival. I used to buy water gel because it was wicked cheap; then I went to college and said I'm not mail ordering in $0.50 worth of gel, and my crickets are surviving just as long without the gel as they were with.
I wouldn't use ONLY carrot or potato as a gutload/water source, but include them in a mixture of other vegetables, fruits, and plenty of mixed greens. As long as the crickets have access to fresh and varied foodstuffs they should be OK. Also be sure to change out the entire contents of the food container regularly, its been pretty warm and somewhat humid locally causing a lot of fungi and mold issues.
i only use the gel stuff becuase where i keep my crickets, the potatoes dry out too fast. the gel lasts me a few days, but a potato lasts less than a day. but yeah, you dont have to use the gel, just give them a variety of veggies to hydrate themselves with and much on, and they should be fine.
You don't need any water source as long as they are given fresh vegies for hydration but it is important to feed them some protien as well not just carrots and potatos
