I always wondered how a gecko escapes and thought it would never happen to me. Ha! Last night I didn't do anything different than I have been. Meeko has been fine with me just sliding his lid shut and not locking it. I didn't take into account his new hammock that sits halfway up the enclosure. We have two highly predatory house cats. Last night I heard them doing something behind my door, didn't think much of it. Then at around 7:00 AM one of the cats was doing something at the side of my bed that is against a wall.
I thought our cat dropped a toy back there. Wanting to go back to sleep, I reached down not really awake yet. I felt something cold and bumpy. I knew immediately it was some kind of lizard/gecko, but I didn't consider it could be MINE! I thought a Skink got lose in the house again. I grabbed the flashlight next to my bed (for emergencies such as this) and holy shit it's Meeko!!! I was able to gently squeeze him out between my bed and the wall, then I thoroughly checked him over. He was fine! It was unbelievable. He made a faint sound while I was holding him. His stress level had to be through the roof.
There was no opening in his lid before I put him back again, which was weird. The only logical way he escaped was going up on his hammock, pushing the lid with his nose, and getting it to wiggle open wide enough. He then had to drop about 3 feet to the floor. Many bad things could have happened. He could have gone into the rabbit's pen in my room, been injured by the cats, gone down the heating vent, or just lost completely in the house.
I'm feeling VERY thankful all those did not occur and he ended up in a safe place next to me close enough to grab.
Needless to say I'm using the screen locks now.
Here is safe and sound.
Passed out a few hours later...
