Halloween ORANGE Mask Geckos?? Is It Possible?

I've fallen in love with the Halloween Mask morphs but I've been wondering if anyone has successfully created a bright orange halloween masked geckos? (like carrot heads, but with more defined "mask" patterns). How cool would that be! I'm sure somebody is working on this....I'm guessing you would have to work with the sunglow/aptor/raptors to create this?

I've got some 'halloween mask' possible RAPTOR hets that so far have had heritable 'jack-o-lantern' style head patterns. They're completely unrelated to Paul's true Halloweens though. I think this is a fairly typical pattern for possible RAPTOR hets though, and I think these adults and babies could even be classified as APTOR, but they weren't sold to me as such so I just label them as nice Tremper albinos. Here are the parents:

And here are the babies:

Very cool! I was thinking more along the lines of extremely bold orange mask type patterns along the face and body.....I guess a "Bold Designer Tangerine" type...with not only bright orange head mask markings, but bold bright orange patterns along the body as well. I have yet to see something like that. The picture of baby #3 above is something along the lines of what I'm envisioning an "Orange Mask" to be...except more of those distinct markings along the body as well (really really bold orange lines). Man, I wish I had photobucket to describe what I'm trying to envision here....

I'm not into geckos without pattern, except Blizzards, and I've always wanted to make one with lots of pattern AND orange body color... I'm finally going for it this year... :main_yes:

I'm hoping to get some nice stuff from Afghanicus x Hypo Bell... My Bell "line" produces very bold patterns so it's an obvious cross to do now that I have my male Afghanicus... I also have a couple joint projects with my Bold Bells x Halloween Masks... :D

I've been asking the same thing myself, Lani. ;)

I've talked with several breeders about this - ones that have tried it in the past - and most throw their hands up in frustration and give up. I might just do the same, but hopefully not. The frustration comes from the fact that most nice tangerine genes are so closely tied to "hypo-ness" because breeders worked for years to remove all the black! Now, trying to get it back on is tough!!

What I, and others, have found is that usually the tangerine "over rides" the bold and washes it out. Or the bold over rides the tang and you get a yellow and black gecko (not hard to do). Nice bright yellow and bold black look good together...but I'm like you (and many others)...I want to see deep tangerine and bold black on the same gecko.

I'm hoping the Halloween Mask traits will help in this since their boldness usually increases with age. So far I've been very pleased with one season of crosses towards the orange & bold. I was surprised to see a few bright orange jungles that keep some black and brown bold patterning. Some of the "f2" crosses from the project this season will help me understand a lot more. Check out my bold collection page when you get a chance to see some of the geckos from that project.

On another note, I do think the aptor/raptor genes will and can help with this. Most of the bold stuff originated from Ron Tremper...including the Halloween Masks...so it's not surprise that his trempers exhibit the mask patterns ;)

Hope this helps.... :main_thumbsup:

Thanks for sharing Paul. I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say.

If it was easy, then it would have been done already :)

I have been viewing your updated site and love everything on it.

Thanks Paul ;)
Do any of you remember a picture of "Nieves tangs" in an older Leopard Gecko manual? I'd love to find that picture again. If I remember correctly he had a nice orange and black gecko project.

And, to add to my earlier post...I'm not saying that there aren't some great examples of orange and black geckos around, but I don't know of a specific line anymore...that give consistent results (ever since the day of the "shtcb boom"...lol).

I'll definitely be checking the "Show Off Your Leos" section for Orange Halloween Masks. Good luck with your projects everyone! (and from the information you've given me, it sure sounds like it's gonna be one helluva project, but a fun one at that!)

Oh yeah, and I just checked out your halloween mask x tangerine jungle project Paul, very nice bold patterns you have there - it's a start of something stellar.

It is very possible! In fact I have seen quite a few Carrothead Trempers that closely resemble a "Halloween Mask". Breed some of those to some Trempers that have the most, and most bold patterning, for a start... I would say, but that is just me. :main_thumbsup:

My 2 cents is to try with the Blood Hypo's. The female in my avatar looks very halloweenish in regards to color in person. I am not working on any Halloween anything right now but if I had to pick higher contrast red/orange with deep black's I would somehow try to incorporate the Blood Hypo genetics. A lot of the Blood Hypos have Black on their heads already so it may or may not be easier than some think. Anyways, it's just food for thought :)
