I've had my gargoyle gecko for 2 weeks. He's about 6 months old. His move was a bit stressful to begin with (the reptile shop assistant dropped him!) but since then he has been fine, moving confidently around his tank once the light's off and eating well. But when I go into the room he scarpers behind his leaves. How do I begin to handle him? Thanks!

just reach in,and carefully pick him up. just scoop him up,and go from there. The more time you spend with it,the calmer the lizard will be when pick it up.
If you haven't handled it much @ all, start by sitting on your bed,(couch,etc...just someplace where WHEN it jumps,it won't fall too far.). Pick it up,and just let it walk from hand to hand. you'll be able to read it's body language,if it's about to jump, etc. try to limit initial handling to 10-15 minutes,a couple times a week.

ooh, quick side note- if it's "smiling" @ you (mouth open),it's generally willing to bite. doesn't really hurt, but has a surprising amount of jaw pressure for a critter it's size.I usually just let the juvies bite me,so that they know it won't faze me.
