That's cool for you tp post this, Paul! My father was a United States Marine... Korean War and Viet Nam War veteran, decorated. Funny thing is, I received his USMC foot locker today, full of his treasures, on the birthday of the USMC.

Not to hijack this thread, but here is a link to the Memorial site I created for him. (Be sure to check out the photo slide show... funny pics of me as a kid, and great pics of Dad in his uniform):

On a more serious note, I dedicated this poem to my father and would like to dedicate it to all the brave men and women of the United States Marine Corps and Armed Forces who have given their lives for our freedom:

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood to face the Lord,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders
and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I had to take a second job,
When the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
And if you don't, I'll understand".

There was a silence all around the Throne,
Where the Saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully now on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell".

Now I Know.....

.......I’m major late with this reply, but better late than never :D.

Marcia it’s always a pleasure for me to address fellow service members and family, but especially the daughter of a US Marine, Korean and Vietnam War veteran. The US Marines of that time were definitely of a "different breed", and still highly respected throughout the Corps.

Paul on behalf of me and other Marines worldwide, THANKS FOR THE HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :main_thumbsup:

Not sure how I over seen this post however, it might have something to do with this being posted during the USMC Ball weekend for me, and my birthday being Nov. 11th.........that time of the year is usually very fuzzy....lol :D;)

Once again, thanks, and Semper Fi!
