Heat tape w/o thermostat

Is it possible/ safe to skip the thermostat and use only a dimmer switch for heat tape on a small rack?

Thats all that those zilla 500's are, dimmers. Yes it would work but I wouldnt feel safe about it. Go to amazon and search for the hydrofarm thermostats. They are 30 bucks shipped and are digital. I use them on all 3 of my racks
