im interested in building my own rack for the group of females i have. i have a solid shelf with adjustable shelves that i would be able to screw in place to accommodate some tubs for the geckos. i was wondering how would i control the heat with something like this? using heat tape and a temp controller, or dimmer, isnt there a problem with one shelf getting hotter than another, or the middle tub getting hotter? where would you place the probe with a temp controller, the ones that turn the tape off if it gets too hot? can you place the plastic tubs right on top of the heat tape? with my shelf having a solid back and sides, wouldnt the heat build up very easily? ive seen the thread on building your own rack, but like i said, im still confused about temp control.

I would use a thermostat instead a dimmer. I have a 5 shelf rack with flexwatt heat tape. I have the probe in the center of the middle shelf. The temp on the top shelf is 1-2°warmer and the lowest shelf is 1-2° cooler. (but still within range) As for putting the tubs directly on the heat source, I have no issue with this because with the thermostat my heat tape only gets up to about 93° which is not hot enough to damage the tubs. Hope this helps.

I just got one of these because I had heard good reviews from others who use it with gecko racks.
I will be installing it in my new rack next week and see how it performs throughout the next few weeks before I put geckos in the rack.

finally got it hooked up last night.
Have checked temps for about 12 hours now. Its ok.
I definitely understand why people pay 5x as much for a Herpstat or Helix.
Proportional thermostats are always going to be better.
The hydrofarm thermostat just turns on, warms up, then shuts off, cools down then turns on again.
While this seems fine in theory, what you get is temperatures that are up and down all the time. It seems kind of inaccurate as well. By inaccurate, I mean that it goes above the temp you set it for by a degree or two, then shuts off, then drops a few degrees below the temp you set it to, then turns back on. It might seem fine to most of you, but I am pretty particular.
If the next few months/years go by like this and I don't see much difference, I will likely be saving my pennies and buying a new rack and proportional thermostat sometime within the next year or two.
Full review to come later when ample time passes to become better aquainted with the pros/cons of this thermostat.
