Heating question...

I just got back from the south florida repticon reptile show about 4 hours ago or so. Any way I came home with 3 female gecko's.
A lavender a Hypo Tangerine carrot tail and a jungle phase. All are females. Well anyways in their 20 gallon tanks their all set up almost the same. I have a heat pad the zoo med one its the 2nd biggest one. Anyways the pad proably covers a 1/4 of the tank in a coner. The manual says it takes up 6 hourse to get to its warmest state.

Anyways I use sand yeah I know it's not what you guys use or reccomend.
at the <B>surface<B> of the sand in the hot end is right now 96 degress it doesnt feel super hot or anything. On the cool side it's like 76. Im worried that the temp of the warmside will keep rising for like 2 more hours and get to warm. I suppose I could make the sand on the warm side higher which would lower the temp. Whats the highest temp I could have on the warm side?

The warm side should not be above 92. High temperatures can cause medical problems. I'm not sure that raising the sand will help due to the fact that it conducts heat. Remember that though it doesn't feel warm to you, their body temperature is different than yours.

it won't raise the temp. but the temp will not change. It will stay the same at the hot side.

Well at the center of the pad it's currently 85...It was too warm like 93 so I turned the pad of to let it cool down and I just turned the pad on again but at a very low level.

Exactly.. Our bodies are 98.6 degrees, and so if anything, the temp should feel a little cool to you

Don't make the layer of sand to big, since it doesn't conduct heat very good. All my cages contain just half a cm of sand and it's more than enough. Don't worry about one side being a bit to hot for a little while. Geckos like most animals are mobile and are able to choose where they want to go. If one side is too hot and another is cooler, they will find a place that they like best.

Greets,

Stevie

Ok im gonna need some help quick. The heating pad wont drop below 94 degress which is better then like a 105 which is what it proably would have reached. I understand this is too hot but I have a plan. What could I put underneath the sand right above the heating bad the that would stop some of the heat from getting to the sand. I thought about a old rag handtowel and then a piece of cardboard. What else could I do or use???
