My leopard gecko laid an egg today... after she threw bedding in her water bowl and laid the egg in it. I guess that's one way to create humidity, eh mama?

I wasn't expecting the egg... I work at a pet store & the incubator is at work - unreachable until tomorrow at least.

My first problem is this: thinking she just scattered her bedding (she does this a lot) I took the water bowl and tried to shake a little of the dry bedding off the top - uncovering the egg. Realizing my mistake, the egg is now right side up... but is this going to effect the egg at all? It's already started to harden and such.

Secondly - I don't have access to the incubator until tomorrow like I said - could I make some sort of makeshift incubator? or should I leave it in the tank? I have a small crock pot I could heat up, put a pan over, put the water container with the egg on top of that, and put something over that so the heat stays trapped. Do you think that would work? Or am I crazy?

Like I said - unexpected egg. Freaking out a little here - haha.

First what are you using for bedding.
as for care for now.

put in tupperware with some sort of substrait moist not dripping wet keep in cage

I'm using sani chips. I have some vermiculite at work, but since her first egg was a dud and I didn't see anymore in her belly I didn't think I'd need it at home.

I've got it in the tupperware on the warm side.

Okay... the egg is still hardening so that's a good sign I guess. I'm keeping it warm and in the moist substrate until I can get to the incubator tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's a viable egg & all goes well.

You need to get rid of that for substrate and use tiles paper towl or newspaper

I've used sani-chips for years & never had any problem. They have never ingested or impacted. I prefer it to carpet or paper towels for many reasons. Everyone's best guess is based on experience - mine has taught me that sanichips treat me & my geckos very well. And it absorbs heat better than anything else.

I just got this pair, their moist hide has slightly damp paper towels in it until I can get the hatchrite from work (I prefer this to vermiculite, though I have a bag at work as well). I've always done this in the past as a temp thing, but the female laid her egg so quickly.
