Hi everyone, I'm Shawnee. I have actually NEVER owned a reptile in my entire 21 years of life, even though I've always loved them. I've always only owned mammals. Currently I have a dog, two cats, and seven dwarf hamsters.

My main reason for never owning them is I didn't want to deal with light bulbs/heating pads (I am quite paranoid of fire risks), and I am VERY squeamish around jumping bugs (So I can't feed crickets or roaches, ugh). I had a grasshopper jump on me once and I felt like I was having a heart attack, so, yeah, no bugs for me. Also I am an avid rodent lover and owner and I can't bear the thought of feeding a snake a live or dead rodent.

For years I had resigned myself to never owning a reptile because I just thought it was impossible. Until I discovered Rhaco's. No bulbs needed AND you can feed them Repashy which doesn't require bugs?! I can't tell you how happy that makes me that I can FINALLY own a reptile!

So, I am hoping to be the proud owner of a Gargoyle gecko! I may get one later this month or early next month, however there is going to be a Reptile expo in St. Augustine that I'm thinking of going to to get my gecko. Would you guys say you get better/healthier animals through reptile expos or from online? I am not sure which route to go...because I really don't want to buy from a pet store.

I still have a lot to learn about the Gargoyle's, but I am so excited at the prospect of owning one!

The only thing stopping me right now is finding the right hygrometer. All the ones I see on amazon have not so great reviews about them being inaccurate. What do you guys use for a hygrometer that is accurate?

Anyways, I'm really excited to be here to learn all I can and maybe make some friends! Thanks :)

Welcome! To the forums! You will find a lot of good info her. [emoji4]

Glad you found a reptile that will work for you! Some people will tell you that Crested & Gargoyles are healthiest if they are fed insects once a month. They can be raised alone one on a frugivore diet, though.

I use this hygrometer and I haven't had any issues with it. It gives me accurate readings in my Cresties & Leos tanks.

As for online or at an expo you can get healthy animals at either. The nice thing about an Expo is you can examine the animal in person. If you do go online do your research on who are the reputable breeders. If you go to the expo look through the forum for what to look for in a good seller and a bad seller. [emoji4]

Change those pluses to pet smart without the space between the word to see the hygrometer or Google All Living Things Digital Hygrometer
