I want to convert a large bookshelf I have into a few leo homes, but there is one thing im not sure of. How do you use a uth for each shelf with out the uth burning the wood do you put slate down and the the uth and then more slate? Then what happens if it broke?

The uth dosn't get that hot... unless it malfunctions really really bad i suppose. I have my 2 tanks on my wooden dresser and they are fine.

i have found out however that the clothes in the top drawers of the dresser get warm. so if you are planning on making the vivs like one on top of the other i do suggest creating some kind of barrier between the top of one viv and the bottom of the uth on top of it. (make sense?:main_huh:) just so that you dont mess with the temps in the vivs on the bottom(s). My dresser is cherry and relatively thick but the heat still makes it through.

Hope it helps!

It does help some I just need to figure out what I should put down to seperate it from the wood, if it needs to be tile or carpet or something more heat resistant

First it probably wont hurt your wood or clothes but if you absolutely want to put something in between you could put a sheet of metal, or hard plastic. I have might on hard plastic and it barely gets warm. The little UTH is barely enough heat to do anything so I think you'd be fine without anything. Your decision though!

Let me show you my book shelf enclosure. I didn't build it, but I can try to explain.

I use carpet as a substrate, cut to fit the enclosures. The units each have a light but I don't use them, the previous owner did. As for heat, you can see the cords, the units are right inside each enclosure. Underneath the carpet, I've stuck the UTH. The sticky side won't adhere REALLY well to the carpet so it's a matter of laying the carpet down gently on top. As for burning, the UTH doesn't get hot enough to even penetrate the wood to the bottom side of it. It does come through the carpet just fine.

The fronts are made from sheets of plexi-glass that are sitting on ledges that have been afixated to the sides. The ledges hold the plexi-glass securely so that the gecko can't slide them up but I can. It's easy to feed with the gap at the top because I just aim one end of the cricket bag in and shake. No need to open the entire thing.

There's a small piece of duct tape on one where the ledge has bent a bit and doesn't always securely hold the plexi glass the first try, so it's a back up thing if I don't have time to "fight" with it.

Those are mine! If you have any other questions, just ask :)

wow that really helps!!!! I was still trying to figure out the uth thing and its good to know that it wont burn the wood, but I think I will figure a different way for it to go in instead of over the top of the plexi-glass. I think I may use slate too but im not sure yet.

Yeah I'm going to be putting holes in the sides to run the cords out of the side instead.
