i've decided to setup a leopard gecko terrarium for my desk. I'm going to use a 10 gallon tank for now since the leopards at petco aren't very big (between 3-5"). I have a 20 gallon long i can upgrade them to later on. Right now i am using paper towels as the substrate. Im using an undertank heater to heat the cage. The warm side of the cage maxed out at 88 degrees and the cold side of the cage is 76 degrees. I have a moist hidebox, made from a tupperware container and sphagnum moss, on the cool side of the cage. Im going to get a food and water dish and a couple things for them to hide in the next time im at petco. Did i miss anything? Will this setup work? When i go to get the leopards, what should i look for? Can they be sexed at 3-5"?

thanks

Sounds like a pretty good set up. I keep their moist hides on the warm side. Most of the geckos at the pet stores seem to be female, but that is pretty small to sex them. Check for clear eyes, no shed stuck to them, have all of their digits. It is difficult when buying from a pet store, I would get a larger rather than smaller one. Good luck!

I used too think that untill me and anouther friend of mine sexed the whole leopard gecko tank at Petco here around Dec 27th. All 18 leopard geckos were male. They ranged in size from about 2 inches to about 5 inches. I was suprised we didn't see any signs of fighting going on but I guess that will happen closer to when they sexually mature.

I was told that the stores either have males or females not a combination. Some Petco`s have males and others have all females to prevent any breeding.

Petco on this side of town might be a female store

Petco on the other side of town might be a male store

This goes for ALL their animals not just Leos, imagine mice or rabbits male and female in the same cage!! It would be an explosion of critters!! lol:main_robin:
