This post is for Jess - here are pics of my Akita. She is the BEST dog I've ever owned. Absolute sweety. I waited 2 years to get her from a breeder and it was worth the wait! She is very laid back, and well trained (she minds me better than my 3 kids!). She is now 8 yrs old, 95-lbs & about 28" to top of her front shoulder (very large female). Anyway, I could gush on longer about my great dog, but I won't:p *beaming-like-a-proud-mama*

Thanks for posting her pics for me Jenn!! She is absolutely gorgeous!!! Probably one of the prettiest Akitas I've seen :sweetheart: I could listen to you beam like a proud momma all day long, LOL, I just LOVE these dogs!! It's just a dream for us, but we WILL have an Akita one day, I promise you!

I can see why you waited two years for her, she really is stunning! They really are the sweetest dogs too, I just love 'em

Here's another pic of her today outside -- standing! I just realized both pics were of her laying down, she is like a big bear rug!! And one reason I waited so long was for good temperment. She comes from a line of wonderful temperment akitas. And smart too!! Another similar breed is the Shiba Inu. Looks just like the akita with similar temperment but much smaller.

She is just so very beautiful!!! I think she wants to come live here in Arizona!! lol j/k she would acyually probably hate that LOL

She really is gorgeous.. When I first met my fiance, he told me how he always loved Akitas, and then I finally met one at this job I used to have working at a metal shop in a friend's garage. His name was Maximo, and he was the sweetest dog I've ever met. I've been in love with Akitas ever since!! I really like their big size too

Max was always VERY protective of his family and his family's friends, I could tell that they make excellent guard dogs, but would also be great for children since they're so sweet.

Poor guy would throw out his hip a lot, though. I was told that hip problems are common since they're so big, and Max wasn't allowed to jump up too much because of it. His owner, though, would just give him some of her prescription pain pills (crushed up and sprinkled on his food). Once they kicked in and he didn't feel anything, he would just pop his hip back into place. Worked out pretty good for her, although I don't just have prescription pain pills laying around all of the time!

Thanks, Ken!

Jess - Yeah, hip dysplasia is a problem in many large breed dogs. Another reason to get one from a reputable breeder. I also like akita's because they are not hyper and they don't bark. In fact, she will give one big "woof" to alert us, another if we don't respond but that's it. And it is certainly enough to ward off anyone with ill intentions!! She doesn't even bark to come in, she "knocks" - LOL. Our back door isn't very pretty anymore LOL!

Anyway, thanks for letting me share! She is truly a wonderful dog and IMO a great breed.

I agree, they really don't get very hyper or bark very much. And yes, I think most burglers or whomever would be afraid of a dog like that!! What a little sweatheart :sweetheart:

LOL, that's funny about the door! I'd rather have the dog and scratched up door then just a door and no dog, 'specially an Akita ;)

IMO best breed there is!!!! :main_thumbsup: Take care, Jenn!

Uggg .... okay, the shedding is the ONLY thing I don't like about her. :( But most dogs shed AND have a list of other things that I don't like!

She "blows her coat" twice a year and it falls in clumps everywhere for about 3 weeks. Although there is barely any shedding inbetween those two times. I am a bit of a neat freak, so during those times it makes me crazy! (One reason I love my geckos! Neat & hypoallergetic) However, she doesn't stink & stays clean kinda like a cat. Many people (who are not dog lovers) will not know I even have a dog because they don't smell or hear her! Unless of course it is shedding time & they see hair! LOL

I feel your pain. We have a Chow-Sheltie mix who is blowing her coat. I'm driving myself crazy trying to keep up with the "tumbleweed". I don't think anyone in my house has seen me without a broom in my hand for weeks!!!
