Well I have a couple ideals if your willing spend the money. I would check the instalation or replace/add it as needed. If the windows are single pane I would replace them with double pane. That would help keep the room warmer. For the door put blinds and maybe drapes. I would also use the higher wattage heat tape. I live on a mountain and the temps can drop pretty good. I have had freezing temps 4 times in the last 3 weeks so I am going to be using the highest wattage heat tape I can find and hook it up to a helix so I can adjust the temp as it warms up. I hope those ideas help you out.

My basement hits a low of 58 in the winter and all my racks are moving down this weekend....hopefully. I am sure 150+ feet of flexwatt will raise the temps alittle until I make more racks.. hahaha

I have a cheap space heater down there right now that does the job because it was my GF's brother's room for few years until I got tired of feeding him:main_evilgrin: He said it heats up the large room quite well, so we'll see.

I plan to either add a secondary heater and make a temp controlled room next year or just insulate it better and use a space heater if I can get away with it.

I live in socal as well, I know most houses/ apartments have those thin windows. When it gets really cold, I'll often hang up heavy blankets or towels over my window, it can help keep the heat in, and the cold out! Space heaters are great too.

The newer models of space heaters do have 2 or 3 settings on them and they actually aren't near as bad of energy hogs or as dangerous as the old ones used to be
They have cool touch and off/tip over features
I have around 3 of them and i use them for the reptiles when the north wind starts to blow and it gets REALLY cold

Because I have my tanks of assorted lizards scattered all over the house and the house is small-one larger and 2 small ones really do the trick

I also do the blanket thing over the windows or i put thick plastic sheets over select windows-that really helps a lot

Good Luck with getting everybody moved and keeping them nice and warm
:D

Most space heaters have a thermostat built in that is "OK" judging by the one I have. I am testing one right now to see if I will keep it. It seems to cycle OK, but I am not convinced that I am keeping it yet. I am going to let it run more today while trying to fine tune the temps to a constant 68-70. If need be I will just crank it up all the way and try a herpstat or alife thermostat to get a more even temp in the room.

If that doesn't do the trick, I will get a different space heater and start the process all over .

Given the beginning of your screen name I'm going to guess you are actually up near the central coast, though at this point that is just a guess.

You have a variety of options but I would put visiting other keepers/breeders in your area at the top of your list. This will give you an idea of how others are keeping their collections and how they cope with environmental conditions.

If you are interested, email me with what region you are in and I can suggest some people to contact.
