am i right to put a hid on the hot side of my tank?? just wondering because i took temps tonigth and surface temp is 91.5 but inside the hide it was like 99 is that bad??
Yes, that is way to high for a warm side temp inside the hide. It needs to be 88-92 on the warm side. What are you measuring with? Yes, you are supposed to have one hide on the warm side along with one humid hide on the warmside. YOu can put a few sheets of paper towel over the where the UTH is to get the temp lower.
yes, you need a hide on the warm side so they cant have a place to hide while staying warm. the moist hide goes on the cold side otherwise the moisture will dry out from the heat. hope that helps.
The humid hide should be on the warm side in my opinion. When the water in the moss/paper towel evaporates from the heat, it creates humidity within the little hide. Everyone does it differently.
The way i figured it was, looking at large lizards like Alligators. They dig into the ground along a lake or river about 20 feet in, the ground temp in those dens is very cool but high in humidity.
Alligators become dormant below 55 degrees so i figure the dens in the summer must be around 65 to 75 degrees. Although Leo`s are not built for water.
So i figure Wet/cool Dry/hot rule. Just my thoughts.
It can go both ways. I just keep it on the warm side so it will keep the wet paper towel hot, enabling the water to evaporate creating the humidity and lasting longer. In one of my tanks, I keep it on the cool side. It works fine, I guess its preferance.
I offer humid hides(of vermiculite) on both sides and see no real difference some leos choose to go to the warm side one and some choose to go to the cool side one. i mist the containers every other day or as needed.
