so what do you guys use as a hide? assuming you keep your hide on the hot side where do you place your probe to get the most accurate reading of the hide and how do you secure it

I typically place my probe under the edge of my hide so the probe is being forced onto the substrate.

i put my probe right on the heat tape and then take a temp gun reading underneath the warm hide

warm end an upside clay sauce and on the cool end a margarine container with damp vermuclite

I use slate and stone for my hides, and tile for my substrait. I put my probe right on the hottest part of the UTH where it sits under the hot hide. I use a little piece of electrical tape to stick it to the tile so it doesn't move.

Hot hide on the right, moist hide in the middle with sphagnum moss, cool hides on the left, tile floor. This is in a 20 long tank.
