I've seen in a few threads where some of you do your own fecals at home. I think most worked/or still do work in the vet field. Do you have it worked out with your vet to aquire meds if need be or if you see something do you have to bring the leo/and or stool sample in?

From what I gather it can be learned. You do not necessarilly have to be in that field, but it would help alot. I imagine someone working in the field can get a prescription a little easier, working with a vet and all. ;)

I used to work as a vet tech and was thinking of doing my own, but wasn't sure if it was worth it or not. But my current vet is not the one I used to work for, so just curious how those who do this went about it. But you're right, there are manuals etc to learn even if you weren't in the field.

I learn that from the Dr. Klingenberg book. Its quite easy, but I don't trust myself 100%; so if I find anything unusual from routine tests (I mix several geckos' poop together to do 1 fecal), I'll take a sample to our vet for proper analysis.

I work at an animal disease diagnostic lab where fecals are done a a routine basis; in fact I tested my first leo's poop for salmonella when I got him (He was positive..imagine that!). However, all the vets here are pathologists and don't have access to medications. I use it as a screening measure...if we found something I would send a sample off the the exotic vet in the area. I have had all three of my leos fecals tested (was a fecal float test) and all came back negative for parasites. I may have them tested for crypto at some point as well...I don't know the virology people as well so I am not sure if they will do it for me or not. <grin>

Just my two cents...

I do everything in house. I have a vintage 100x oil immersion binocular microscope with a mechanical stage. I also have most of the meds used to remedy endo- [and ectoparasites] along with a bottle of suspension base and syringes. I do have a DVM with about 3 decades of experience as a mentor to call on for expertise if I find myself puzzled...
