Hot rock vs UTH

I now use a UTH in my tank, but as an engineer, I want to know how dangerous are hot rocks really; what is the failure rate on them?

I had one when I first got my gecko, but thank GOODNESS for this site and people telling me how dangerous they are. I've read people's accounts of them reaching levels hot enough to scorch our poor gecko's bellies.

I just figure it's a risk...why take it when we're gambling the health of our animals?

I am pretty sure what happens is the rocks crack and "hot spots" exceeding 110 degrees burn your geckos.

when i used to have one like 7 years ago for my anoles it burnt my hand when I touched it so I got rid of it...

i can't tell you the failure rate but i have never met a good hot rock. they all seem to have uneven heating and get too hot.
