PROBLEM WITH HOUSING A GECKO
I HAVE GOT RID OF MY FISH AND CLEANED OUT MY 40 GALLON FISH TANK IT IS TALL AND WID

30INCHES WIDE AND 2O INCHES TALL BUT I HEARD THEY CANT BE HOUSED IN TANKS DUE TO THE FACT IT WONT BE WARM ENOUGH FOR A CRESTED GECKO?
ITS PLASTIC AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK UNDERNEATH SO I DOUBT A HEAT PAD WOULD BE GOOD CAUSE IT MAY MELT IT FOR A LEOPARD GECKO

ALSO THE TOP PART HAD BUILT IN FILTERS SO WHEN I TOOK THEM OUT THEIRS GAPS AT THE TOP OF THE TANK THEY COULD GET OUT AND IDK HOW TO FILL IT IN ORDER TO CONTAIN THE CRESTED GECKO IF I CHOSE THEM INSTEAD OF A LEOPARD ONE

HELP??

Sure so the first one is the size of the tank which is a 40 gallon very spacious tank, the second one is the top of the tank and then the third and fourth is the inside of the top where the built in filter and wires were which have left holes as to which i have no idea what to do about and the last one is a picture of the plastic on the tank which i was telling you about tumblr_nf39ckIAGQ1qergjko1_400.jpg tumblr_nf39ckIAGQ1qergjko2_1280.jpg tumblr_nf39ckIAGQ1qergjko3_1280.jpg tumblr_nf39ckIAGQ1qergjko4_1280.jpg tumblr_nf39ckIAGQ1qergjko5_1280.jpg

Does the lid come off? Like the entire lid, built in filter and everything so its just a tank?
If so, then you can buy a 40 gallon screen lid for like, 20ish bucks. Problem solved for that :D

So that last picture, you can obviously move the tank off the stand. You will need a heat pad for a leopard gecko, but you will not need one for a crested gecko. What you can do though is get something to raise your tank up off the stand just enough so the heat pad is not touching the stand. Some heat pads even come with tank raisers.

the bottom of the actual glass tank has plastic on it aswell which is unremoveable and the lid is like attached to the glass and doesn't just pull of you would probably have to break it off but i dont know the condition of the glass underneath it like it may be stuck on too secure it

The solution to the holes in the top would be to hot glue pieces of window screening over the holes.

Next, you'll have to decide if you really want a crested gecko or a leopard gecko.

For a crested gecko, you have to make certain the gecko cannot push open anything on the top (secure screen very well, find a way to secure the lid if it has a hatch, etc.). If your home gets cold in the winter (less than 18 C), you'll need a ceramic heat emitter regulated by a thermostat to gently heat the enclosure. Because of the way your lid is, you'd likely need to mount the fixture in one corner inside the cage and protect it with metal screening so the gecko does try to jump on it. If your home gets hot in the summer (over 27 C), a crested gecko isn't really the best choice, as they cannot tolerate warm temperatures.

For a leopard gecko, you will need to heat the cage floor. One option is using a ceramic heat emitter regulated with a thermostat. I would recommend installing slate tiles, at least on the warm side, and using the ceramic heat emitter to heat up those tiles to 32-33 C.

Another option would be to get a heat pad that is safe to be mounted inside the enclosure and regulate it with a thermostat. The only brand I know off the top of my head that allows for mounting inside the enclosure would be Ultratherm, but there may be others I don't know about. You can see instructions for mounting inside the cage with silcone on this page:

I hope this gives you some ideas.

My crestie is housed in a glass tank, I have inserted a polystyrene tree effect backing into it. this helps keep some of the heat in.
like these, you can get many diffrent effects: Reptile Vivarium 3D Natural Look Polystyrene Background: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies
I also have a heat mat mounted on one side of the viv which is covered on the out side with a plain square of polystyrene to help reflect the heat back into the viv (as heat mats admit heat from both sides).
he does really well and sits near the mat on a ledge in the winter sometimes. if it gets really cold i cover the exposed sides with towels during the night to keep the heat in.
