Hovabator question

Yay! My Hovabators arrived a day early! Woohoo! :main_laugh: Anyway, this is probably a super newb question as far as this goes, but there are no stupid questions, right?! :wideeyed:

My question: Is there any need for the plastic thing or the mesh floor in the incubator? Or for reptiles does everyone just put containers directly on the bottom of the incubator? I am also wondering if I should just leave the plastic tray out, as it doesn't seem necessary, and just put in the wire mesh floor as this might help with air circulation inside the incubator and around the containers?? Not sure what to do here. :main_huh:
:thinking2:

Thanks!

I dont use either. I plug the drain hole in the bottom of the hovabator and place substrate directly in the bottom. Hope this helps....

Just make sure you take a good day to calibrate the temperatures. Plug them in and let them set for several hours, check the temperature, adjust the wafer controller, and let it sit for several hours again before adjusting it again. After them temp. is good, let it sit overnight without opening it to make sure it's stable.

Better yet, hook it up to a proportional controller.

Thank you so much for the input, everyone! My first pair were just put together a couple of days ago (with not-so-great results for my poor boy...but he's starting to feel better!). Anyway, not expecting eggs right away, but want everything ready to go when they start to come!

Thanks again! You guys are great! :main_thumbsup:

One suggestion about something I had to deal with. If there is a temp fluctuation you might have to move it to a different room or area of the house. I had to move mine three or four times till I found a suitable place where the fluctuation in room temperature wasn't affecting the temps of incubator. That said I will be changing to a proportional controller over the wafer to make sure that I have no issues again of fluctuation of temperatures which can affect the quality of the animals as well as the possibilities of deformities due to inconsistent temps.

OK. I have my female incubator up and running. It's ranging between 81.8-82.9 (I have the thermometer that came with the Hovabator on the floor and I also have a digital thermometer with a probe in a 'dummy' deli cup and both are saying about the same). This is without a new thermostat and over 1 1/5 days. The temp in the room is a consistant 75-76 degrees. Is it still necessary to get another thermostat, or is this an acceptable amount of fluctuation?

Thanks!

Darn close! ;) I just paid $39.95 each (plus shipping) for mine from LLL. They came with free vermiculite and deli cups, too. :D
