How do you feel about "viewable" hides?

You know the hides that are bare on one side so you can put them up against glass and view your reptile? Do you think the reptiles notice? Does it not provide them with the amount of privacy that they need? I can't decide if I want to buy one/two or none at all... or if I'd put it on the cool or warm side.

We have some, not from the pet store, but ones that were made & given to us. The geckos don't seem to really notice. They enjoy the hide either way We keep ours on the warm side since the gecko is on that side the most.
