When they drop their tails and grow a new one, sadly the new one isn't as nice as their original tail.It is like a bumpy stump.

I'm not sure exactly (scientifically) how it regenerates it's tail. I would be very interested in this also. If no one here knows, maybe your science teacher does?

i believe that it is just like human skin growing back, it's just a production of new tissue that attaches it's self to the already existing tissue

The regrowth from autotomy is much like that in humans. Say for example you get your ears pierced. The holes will heal themselves over time if there is no stud put in place.

Also, a little FYI.

Autotomy takes place at a weak point in the vertebrae. When the tail is dropped at this point, it regrows without vertebrae leaving it unable to drop that portion of its tail again unless it does so at a vertebrae higher up. The blood vessels in the tail are also constricted when the tail is dropped to prevent blood loss.

I have often wondered if they can drop their tails more than once
I thought that i read somewhere that they could only do this once but then-that didn't make sense
Here is a pic of a dropped tail and a link to a series of pics showing the progress of a tail regenerating
You may use the pics in your project if you like
