How many is too many when the gecko eats crickets? i have a baby that won't touch mealworms so i used those pinhead crickets and it ate 12 of them in one sitting tonight. Should i get larger crickets so it doesn't have to eat as many or should i cut back on the amount? i know the size rule for feeding leos and it can handle bigger crickets. It kept going after them and its very skinny so i assumed it should eat as much as it wants. Will it stop eating when it has had enough, i heard feed it as many as it can eat in 15 mins, is that a good rule of thumb? This is the little patternless gecko i got from Petco by the way.

When I was still breeding leos (starting back up soon) I'd wait until the hatchlings did their post hatching shed and then start feeding. At this size 2-3 week old crickets (not pinheads) are the perfect size. For the first week I'd only feed 3 crickets a day as they'd typically not eat all 3 in a given day. Once they get established I'd do three to five 2-3 week old crikcets every day.

To quote Bob Applegate, "smaller, more frequent meals resulted in faster growth for my hatchlings." That's per him when I visited him in Oct 2001 and May 2002. Kind of contradicts my above statement some, but you get the idea (I hope). That is, instead of overloading the gecko with as much as it'll eat, thus bogging down the metabolism, maintain smaller, frequent meals to get weight back onto the gecko and get it growing.

I usually leave crickets with my geckos for about an hour; sometimes more. I feed both of mine 3/4 inch crickets once a week and mealworms that rest of the time. Have you never tried to switch your baby over?

Well i started out with crickets but it couldn't seem to catch them. So i went with mealworms but it didnt seem interested, it ate them, but it would eat one a day, sometimes less and when you could tell it wasn't gaining any weight so i decided to go back to crickets and get the smallest ones they had. It ate 12 of them last night in about 10 mins. so i figured id stick with them.
