How many leos for my tank?

I'm getting a tank made up, it's a 13" x 48" and 12" tall. I currently have one leo (5 year old female) and want to give her some company!

Any suggestions?

Same size, eh? So much for Trempers :(

She's about 8" actually. I only have to worry about diseases if I buy from a pet store right? As long as I buy from nice breeders (like the lovely sponsors of this site :main_thumbsup:).

I figure I'll probably buy 2 females, I'm definetly not ready to do any breeding.

One question though. What do you guys suggest for heating? A UTH for one side, maybe a light in the middle, and nothing for the other side?

UTH for one side and nothing on the other. (A low watt red light is OK for viewing, I think mine in a 15 watt so very little heat but enough light that I can see them at night)

And no matter who you buy form you need to quarantine, leos can carry a normal to low load of pins that can actually aid in digestion, shipping, stress, new housing etc can cause these to go haywire and become a problem.

So quarantine, quarantine then once you do put them together make sure to watch them closely for several days to make sure they all get along.

Wow that's scary!

I guess I can put the new one in the 10 gal for quarantine and put mine in the new tank. Will she be fine in there on her own for a while?

How long is the quarantine, and should I be looking for something in particular?

30 days minimum, 90 is better. Just watch their weight and general health appearence to see if they start losing weight, getting really darker in color or lethargic.

You could also take them to the vet for a check up.

Just putting them in separate tanks isn't really enough. There should be a good distance between the tanks. Separate rooms is even better. Also, quarantine means that you should not handle them right after eachother without washing your hands, do not give one leo food that was in the other leo's tank at any point, do not put ANYTHING from one leo's tank into the other tank.
