How many mealworms per month for just one leo?

I've been preparing myself up for my first leopard gecko. (Yea~!)

I haven't bought the leo yet because I want to be 100% ready.

I going to get the cage all set up within the next few days as well as going to have all the proper heating equipment delivered to me.

Now there's only one thing that I'm still scratching my head about: mealworms.

Most of the online sites offer anywhere between a 100 to a 1000 mealworms in their order size. I'm 99.9% sure one adult leopard gecko cannot eat a thousand mealworms in one month nor would I want that many mealworms in my fridge for any long-term period of time.

So I'm thinking about just getting however many mealworms I need to last the future leo for one to two months at a time...but what is that magic number? 300? 400?

Your thoughts pls~!

PS No, the future leo will not be on a mealworm-only diet. I'll give him crickets and superworms on the weekends. Possibly going to use phoenix worms as treats.

PSS Feel free to tell me whether or not this is a stupid question. I won't be insulted.

I think the solution to your dilemma is that you need to purchase a more than 1 gecko(lol).....they will keep each other company.........4 will due nicely and 1k mealworms would be appropiate.

There really isn't a need to purchase more than the one gecko though they are addicting. I feed mine about 50 a week each so I'd say that 300 is fine. That being said if you have a problem with insects in your fridge geckos might not be your thing. Whether there are 300 or 1000 of them makes no difference.

1? How do you own just 1? I have 200+ (leos and cresties) with eggs hatching everyday.......of course to be fair I raise most of their food so that cuts the cost down tremendously.:main_yes:

I don't only have just one, I just answered his questions as to how many 1 eats a month. I also have a colony of mealworms that I feed from. Very glad that I don't have to pay to feed my fam :)

How do you know for sure your new leo will even eat mealies?? Some of mine dont.if you buy 400-1000 mealies and he doesnt eat them ,then what? Why dont you wait to see what he prefers. You might get a leo that will strictly eat crickets. The leos that are big and robust are the ones that will eat everything, crickets, mealies, super worms

Thanks for all your comments.

Yes I know. Having just one leo sounds crazy but I have to start somewhere. (besides only one empty tank right now and its big enough for just one.)

And no. I don't have a problem with insects in my fridge...the rest of the family is a whole different story. I want to be as discreet as possible when storing the mealworms AKA small containers instead of one big one.

i feed mine every other day and he seems to be doing good.

One thing i find funny that lets me know he's hungry is whenever i put my finger in the cage, he hunts it down. I've been bitten many times and to this day, i still get startled by it.

Get feeding tongs if you are going to train him on mealworms. Once he knows how good they are he will eat them from a bowl. But I do agree with Roger, what if he won't eat them? And make sure you get a big fat one cause Roger is right about that too, they will eat anything most of the time.

^I already have tongs ready and I'm looking into buying an big adult male from a breeder who specifically says their geckos have been fed on mealworms. Like I said, I'll feed the gecko a variety but I want his staple food to be mealworms.
