My gecko Frankenstein is a juvie the man at the store told me. Nd he has not had a shed in a week I have had him but he has been in his humid hide constantly for the past 3 days and he is turning a little grey I think to me. How often do they shed?

There's no set time frame that they shed. They obviously shed more often when they are younger because they grow faster. They'll shed every time they grow in length. It could be once every 2-3 weeks or so, but again it depends on how fast your gecko is growing.

They shed more often when they're growing or healing. Exactly how often depends a lot on how much they're eating and the temperatures they're kept at. I would say a range might be 10-40 days in between sheds with younger geckos shedding more (in general) and older geckos laying around doing nothing at the higher end.

uploadfromtaptalk1391574758434.jpg this Frankenstein. Does it look like he might shed soon? He looks like a little grey to me.

Okay do you know if I have to keep the humid hide in there all the time after he/she sheds?

It is alot simpler for me to keep moist hides in there and keep them moist (as part of routine maintenance). This way I am sure that they were not deprived of the moist hide when they suddenly needed it.

It's like asking: Do we have to put toilet paper in the spare bathroom....or just when we might have company? By the time someone needs it, it is too late. After all...they need to be moist BEFORE (and probably after) they shed so that the skin peels off smoothly.

Also, in our dim room lighting, I dont seem to notice my raptors colors dulling...(no problem seeing my blizzard's dulling)...so it's just good to keep a moist hide moist each time you will the water.

My geckos love their moist hides and I find them inside them more often than not so I leave them in there and check them for dampness a couple times a week and add a bit more water if they're dry :)

My gecko (Raka) really seems to like the moss since I put it in her moist hide. I started with just paper towels and it was dry every night when I checked it. I switched to moss and it was dryish every other night. Now I am using folded paper towels with moss on top of it and it will stay moist for more than 5 days. I also found that the material that the hide is made of makes a big difference. I used a lightbulb box for a couple days at first because it was all I had but it dried out far too fast. Now I have a plastic hide which seems to be much better.
