Hello again,

Another question. When I buy my new gecko I'm thinking of getting a male this time because I would prefer to not have to worry about egg binding. But still i like the idea of getting a female because it gives me more flexibility if I wanted to get a second gecko and house them together.

So how serious and prevelant is the problem of egg binding in female geckos? Does it happen often? How can you avoid it?

Thanks.

James

egg-binding can meen death for your gecko so very serious. But just because you have a male does not make you "safe" from egg-binding. I had to have a female of mine put down this year before she starved to death because of egg-binding. Unfortunatly I dont know how to prevent it.

There was a female this year that seemed to be egg bound. She was 1 1/2 year old first time breeder so it was hard to tell if it was just because it was her first season or if she was really egg bound. I saw her digging in her hide and she started what looked like involuntary constractions, but no egg. So 3 days later she had still not laid and was losing her color, getting lethargic and pinned to the UTH. We thought maybe she wasnt getting enough heat so we put a heat lamp over her and she finally was able to push out the slug.

I'm not sure if she was egg bound because im not sure if its something that a gecko can really work through. But put it this way she was 87 grams before breeding season and she went down to 60 at her lowest. We had to feed her with a syringe for 3 days and now she looks up at me expecting it haha she's so spoiled! She has since gotten her color back and eating on her own :)

I'm not sure how to tell if gecko is egg bound(besides a trip to the vet for an x-ray)and its hard to find info online about it so I hope someone that has been through this answers this post with signs/symptoms/treatment. I'm curious to how often it happens as well...

As I have read, it seems like egg binding is more common in females that are bred too young.
