hey although im new at this i have a colony of mealworms that are doing great. but im having a difficult time seperating the worms from the weat bran im currently using, ive also been using whole weat flour and right now i think its easier for me to get the work done with just that if you can post a picture of the tool you use for taking out the mealworms that would be great!!!!

a happy meal worm equals a happy leo :D

I use a regular kitchen strainer. And i let the worms eat all the bran before i sift them out. Also i have used wheat flour before and it gets the worms big really fast!

since all of my feed/substrate is ground, i use a beardie pooper scooper to sift my worms out. of course not used for scooping poop, lol.

its this exact one...

and a pair of tweezers.

When cleaning or replacing my wheat germ substrate layer I'll use a kitchen sink drain strainer as its mesh is large enough to sift the wheat germ but small enough to not let larger mealies pass through. Freshly hatched mealies end up being collateral damage. :(

I put a small mesh screen over my garbage and dump it on top and the bran goes down adn teh worms are on the screen. i have like.. 500+ supers. it only takes one dump over the screen and i put them back in their 15 qt tub.

Great idea for supers, but don't do with mealies... you'll lose too many little ones. ;)

I use some window screen as a sieve.

Bran is such a pain to deal with imo.

I recommend putting all you worm food (unless its all flour) in a blender to break it up. Makes sifting easier.

I have used the poppet scooper, and it works great!

Wait, you can use whole wheat flour for mealworms for leos? That would make it soooo much easier to see the babies and what not.Is there any drawbacks to using flour over wheatbran? This is off topic,so if you'd prefer, someone could PM me the answers:DThanks!

Haha, I used oatmeal flakes with my mealworms (my first colony), and then I had a mold problem. The flakes were too big to use a sifter, so I had to take out all my mealies by hand. It took over an hour to get all of those little buggers out of there!

I'm going to use the blender trick next time :)
