How to tell Gender

Hi I am rather new to the world of the gecko and I have an 8 month old Crested Gecko. I've been told that right now it's hard to determine if he's a male or a female, and I refuse to call him an "it", and as he grows older it will be possible to tell. And I've been wondering if Crested Geckos are sexual dimorphic, meaning males and females can easily be told apart.
Before the gecko I had green anoles, males are usually remarkably larger then the more slender females and they also sport a bright colored skin lap on their throat that can expand into a sort of fan in order to attract mates and scare off other males.

I'm not sure if male and female Cresties are as easily distinguishable. So my question is can you tell if your gecko is boy or girl just by looking at it while its young or when it's a bit older and if so how?

Well at that age it's not completely obvious but you should be able to start telling fairly definitely after about 9 months of age. At the bottom of this page http://www.pangeareptile.com/id52.htm it explains how to tell the difference, it's probably easier to look at those pictures than it would be for me to explain.

Sexing has nothing to do with age because these guys all vary in size even at the same age. It is all about weight. Some geckos are sexable at around 4-5g. But pores can take as long as up to 14-16g to appear. I have had one gecko appear female up until 12g it sprouted pores. Bought another as a sexed female at 17g, when it arrived I noticed it had pores and it was male. The seller admitted they had not louped sexed the gecko since 14g, so somewhere between 14-17g the gecko grew pores. This is why you dont see geckos under 20g sold as for sure females, normally you will see them marked as possible or probable females.

Mature Male, you will see his hemipenal buldge right at the base of his tail

Here it is on a tailless male

Here is an adult female, you will notice she is a little pouchy at her tail base but nothing like an adult male

And this is a tailless female

So depending on the sixe of your gecko, it may be possible to get a somewhat accurate sex on it. If you can post a very clear and non blurry close up pic of the vent area (place the gecko in a deli container or a kritter keeper for the pic), and I can try to sex it for you. Males have 2 things oing on, they have femoral pores which are little spots on the insides of their hind legs. As they continue to mature they grow a hemipenal buldge (that holds the mangoods). Females can sometimes have a few pores, and they can be a little pouchy where the hemipenal buldge would be on a male, but a mature male is easy to tell.

This is the kind of pitures you should be taking to get a good view of the pores. If you take a close look you will see the first gecko in the first 2 pics is male, the second gecko in the last 2 pics appears female
