I purchased a Hydrofarm thermostat and was wondering where the best spot would be to put the sensor... I use a repticarpret as of right now but should I have it under the mat over the heat pad or on the tank on the heat side or some where else? Thanks in advance for the help

Put it on top of the carpet above the heat mat. Putting it anywhere else, It will not maintain correct temps.

The problem with that is that the gecko could mess with the probe and if the probe is moved off of the heating source, the heating source will continue to heat at its highest output which would be bad news. The OP just needs to put it under the tank or under the carpet and then measure the surface temp of the carpet. The thermostat may need to be set to 95 to acquire the temp of 90 on the carpet.

Put it under the repti carpet for sure, I don't want my geckos pooping all over the expensive thermostat, but thats your call.

^ popping all over the expensive thermostat? lol..:main_huh: not sure how that would happen.

Just put the sensor on the top of your substrate over the heat mat and tape the sensor base down to the surface, easy as pie. You shouldn't have a problem with your gecko defecating on the sensor unless it does it's business in the warm hide.

If it isn't under the substrate then why wouldn't it be a possibility that they could poop on it? my geckos go wherever they want to, constantly changing their bathroom area to inconvenient places to clean up.

For what it is worth I always just taped it down to the carpet using duct tape. They never seemed to care, or bother it.

Edit: Can't believe I put duck tape... /facepalm

i have to agree with russel, if your using a thermostat and put the probe on top where the leo will be. the leo can lay on the probe and it can make the probe read the temp of the leo wich can be a lot lower if he just came from his moist hide or somthing, and the therm will heat up the heat pad to get the "temp" back up and make it way to hot for your gecko. This does and will happen because my leo does it all the time, luckily i use a lamp dimmer so i know that he is just laying on the thermometer and its reading his body temp. Go with rus's idea, his is the least risk.
