hi my name is zoie i have 2 leo's bob and rita

when i got rita and bob.Rita was already gravid.which is some thing i wasn't wanting till i had done some reading on how to take care of a gravid female gecko but it was not to be.
As soon as i got them home i put bob in another tank and that is were he will remain until i know enough about this.
But at the min my main thing is getting my little rita though this.
she has had one egg which is now in the incubator but she had not had the other egg.
she keeps lifting her tail and looking and licking at her back end which makes me think that she has another egg in her due to the way she is acting
I am getting a little worried has it has been 5 days since she dropped the first egg.
She has a cake tub in the viv with moss in it and i have put a black sheet over the front of the viv so she cant see anyone about cos she is out in the day time.

i have breed corns snakes in the past so have some experience of breeding but never with lizards which is why i am so worried about her if it was a corn snake i would know what to do right away.

i don't want to lose my little girl and am trying my best to help her in any way i can.

she is still bright but not sure if she has eaten much as there is only 1 cricket missing on a morning when i get up.

my temps are 29.4oc in the hot end in the day time and 21.2oc on a night on cali sand for subs and food wax worms large black crickets dusted with calci-dust by vetark

i am sorry for such a long post but i thought if anyone would know what to do it would be a site just for geckos.

so any info anyone could give me would help.

love zoie

she had now gone back into her hide.

i have changed her sub in her lay box too i have changed it from moss to vermiculite so i will see if that helps

if she is still gravid, you should be able to see the egg through the skin. sometimes leos will lay one egg, then another a couple of days later. other times if they lay just one, they will absorb the second egg.

on a side note, it's my opinion that calci sand is harmful to all reptiles. i would recommend using paper towels, tiles, or butchers paper for substrate. ingestion of sand can cause intestinal impaction which could lead to their deaths. as far as food goes, only use wax worms occasionally or not at all. they are high in fat but very low in protein. geckos can quickly become addicted to them and refuse all other food sources. they can be offered as treats, but i would only recommend using them once a month.

i only do give them in very small amount and not often
i have had reptiles for 10 years just not leo's
i have had dragons so do know that giving wax worms is like us eating a burger every day and is not good for them to have them in large amounts
as for the sand it is something i have always had all my lizards on and have never had a problem the sand i use is like chinchilla sand in is fine grain
i have also run this past my vet which is were i buy the sand from and she has assured me that there will be no threat impaction other wise i would not use it.

as for my Rita i have looked at her and i can see small white bits on each side of her and a dark line in the middle of her under side

not to argue with you, but you said you have kept other lizards, just not leos. i was just making a recommendation based on other's experiences as well as my own when it comes to calci sand. if your vet told you that there was no threat of impaction with sand, i would get another opinion. especially if they are the one's selling it.

as for her being gravid, it sounds like you are seeing egg follicles. if she just laid and there was another egg there, it would be plainly visible. sounds to me like she is in the clear. hope the egg hatches for you.

i am not arguing either i also have experiences with normal calci sand.
which this is not it has been formulated by a vet for the use in reptile housing and has been subject to many studies to make sure there is no threat to the reptile of inpaction
i live in the uk and am very lucky to live not too far from one of the best reptile vets in uk were i buy the sand from so as for getting a second opinion that is not needed.
but we all have our own views on sand but as you live in the USA.
i am not surprised you have not heard of the sand that i use as it is only sold at my vets and a few close reptile shops.

As for my girl thank you very much for all your help with her so it looks like i can breath a big sigh.
but could u give me any info why she is still looking at her back end and licking her bits she had been checked for worms and all came back clean or and i just catching her after she has been to the loo because it not all the time she dose it.

and yes thank u the egg she has had looks very good and is lovely and white
