I stopped into a petsmart after work tonight. I always check the reptiles in these type stores to see if they are being properly cared for. I could not believe what I saw in the Bearded Dragon enclosure. There was a beardie that was at least twice the size of all the other ones it was with. But what I seen that absolutely made me go through the roof was that he was eating one of the smaller ones!!! He had swallowed its tail and had it in its mouth all the way up to its belly, with its legs hanging out both sides. It was still alive when I first seen it. But, by the time I got a manager to open the enclosure so that I could separate them it was dead. I was so pissed!!! I told them what I thought about it and left. I had a 40 minute drive home and was fuming mad all the way. Absolutely unacceptable!!!!

That is sooo terriable how do those stores get away with taking such horriable care of their animals? It is rare to see any well taken care of animals in those huge chain pet store empires. I better not say any more...

That's really awful. I don't know what I would have done in your situation..

Just another reason to stay away from the pet stores. :furious3:

Wow thats sad. And look at it this way , thats how much they care.
Did the manager even say anything. One time i was buying a cage at the one by me and my brother said come here and, he was by the hamsters. when I looked in the cage there was a dead hamster prest to the glass and you could see its ribs. Poor little bearded dragon. I'm sorry you had to see that.

We have many so called pet stores around my area and let me tell you, it seems they're only in it for the money. Most of the owners or the people working there don't know squat about the proper care of their animals.

That's the problem. Oblivious pet store owners sell a reptile to some 10 year old boy. The owner gives the kid what he thinks is proper care. The lizard dies within a month. The kid comes back and buys another one. Good business for the owner and the boy comes home happy with another pet. It's a vicious cycle.

A little over a month ago, I went to a mall and visited the local pet shop. They had about 30 parrots which half of them had little to no feathers around the neck and belly area! What pissed me off the most was that they had a ball python in a 10gallon tank with whatI believe to be about 30 Mice. I told them to take it out because it was too stressful and dangerous for the snake to be in there. She told me it was ok because the snake hasn't eaten any of the mice, DUH!!! People nowadays want to make a quick buck without the proper knowledge of anything! At the same time, you will always find that innocent kid that is wide eyed and excited to buy an animal regardless of it's health or husbandry.

I think that someone on this forum should open up a reptile petstore place that knows what they are talking about. That way at least you know you are doing your part to help the little animals out there that really being treated poorly. Maybe I'll plant that idea in my fiances brain. HEHE. He's always wanted to have something to do with animals for his job.
