I feel so mad, sad and guilty.

Athena lost her tail sometime between 9 am and 12 pm 5/26/12. :(

on 5/25/12 I had decided to keep her in a critter keeper (till i can fashion a sterolite tub), because the 10 gallon tank was scaring her and she wasn't finding her food. so i set to work cleaning out the cages and i moved my male into the 10 gallon tank and her in to critter keeper. i also moved them to my bedroom. while in the critter keeper she found her food and water and even sat on her gargoyle again. feeling happy about the cleaning and switch i went to bed.

(due to alot of stress and home issues i have been getting little to no sleep, and if i'm not restless, i sleep like i'm comatose)

before yesterday the cats had left them alone, so this kind of shocked me.

around 9 i hear a thud, i fly out of bed to find Juju And O'Mally (sister and brother bobtail cats) had knocked off my spray bottle and i quickly shoo'd them out, spraying them and the entire way, and closed my door. somehow they had gotten back in, (my mother may have opened my door to check on me) and when i awoke around 12 i looked over at where Athena was supposed to be to find her gone, keeper and all  . jumped out of bed sending blankets, pillows and a stuffed fox flying, only to find O'Mally crouched over my poor Athena, with Juju blocking her escape  . i gently snatched Athena up and started hysterically screaming for my mother, she comes and shoo's the cats out. i call my best friend who has had a gecko and cat encounter much like this, except her gecko got bit on the inside of a back leg. she comes and checks her out, says she is fine, a little shaken but fine. we found her tail, which had been carried under my bed. thanks ever so much BAD JUJU!!!!

(cats were disciplined and are not allowed in my room till further notice!!!)

please i beg don't come at me like i'm the worst pet owner in the world. i have been beating myself up all day, i even feel guilty for punishing the cats. :(

Look at it this way! Don't Feel Bad!! The tail did what it was designed and evolved to do!!

We cannot control everything in this world. We'd go crazy trying. And it sounds like your baby will be fine. Dont be too hard on yourself.... we've all geen there.

There is some poor lady on the iHerb blog who just lost the majority of her extensive snake collection to a heater malfunction.

You did your best for this given situation. Don't be too hard on yourself! You're still a great gecko keeper!

Just keep her wound clean and look for signs of infections. She wasn't scratched or anything else was she? You can pick up some Neosporin (NO PAIN RELIEVER! Plain/Original Neosporin only, the pain reliever is toxic to reptiles) and put it on her tail stump. They usually close up on their own without assistance, so it's not necessary.

Thankfully you got to her in time and all she lost was her tail.

Thank you guys!!! :')

I am happy to report that Athena is doing good. she is still a little jumpy, she acts like she will nip me, which is understandable, and i actually have her in a critter keeper in a cardboard box with the flaps taped up on my dresser now.

i don't have neosporin, would triple antibiotic ointment work? Athena doesn't have any scratches, cuts, bites, or anything, just missing her tail.

i think the reason the kittens didn't do any damage is because they were basically hand reared. even tho they had a feral mother, they never really learned to hunt.
(they are a year old next month, but because Cassandra and I bottle fed them i refer to them as the kittens)

I'm just a little late in replying to this thread because I only joined recently but......... I think you are an awesome pet owner. You obviously care very much for the well being of your critters. Someone who didn't care would not feel bad or post it. Accidents happen and cresties are made to drop tails. Don't feel too bad. I'm a very careful parent and I've still made a few trips to the Er. Stuff happens....

Don't feel bad at all. Just remember to stay calm and quickly address the situation. It is natural for cats to go after prey animals. :) My dog actually has become a little too interested in my leos after recently switching them to a small rack of tubs. A couple are right on her level and she loves to watch them. I think they secretly watch her too. :) 045.JPG

Don't be too hard on yourself. I'm sure I would be very sad about the situation too. Just try and keep the cats away from the geckos and you should be fine. :) Don't worry about it, lots of cresties lose their tails. It's very common.
