I found a young sparrow type bird while crossing the street. I saw he couldnt fly so I bent down and picked him up. He hopped out of my hand and back into traffic. I ran to get him but a car went right over him. He was unscathed and not hurt at all. I ran into the traffic and got him. This was ten minutes before a storm as well. So I got him in to safety before the storm. I named him/her Thunder.
I bought a syringe to feed him. Also crushed mealworms yukkkkk! EWWW. In order to feed the bird I put this through the syringe. I realize that these birds carry germs and stuff but i felt like i would be a horrible human not recueing this bird from the cars. HElp! Im reading around now. Thanks

Wow that was really nice of you, Yeah Mealworms are a good source of Protien so it is recommended to feed them to wild birds. I don't think the germs will hurt you unless the bird touches an open wound or you don't wash your hands with soap and touch your mouth or some thing.

Thanks Darkmaster! I have read and taken advice from many. It seems I must let the baby sparrow go around a flock of them and they will innately feed him/her. Today is the big day to let him her go. I will be sure to observe the situation before walking away. These little critters are so much work i tell you! I love them and dont mind though.

FYI, next time you find a bird (or any wild animal) that needs help you should call the DNR. They will know of all the licensed wildlife rehabilitators in your area. (You actually need a special license to work with wildlife, and something extra to work with birds. Not to scare you or discourage you, but most people don't know that. I think you did a great thing and I would've done the exact same in that situation. :) ) I've never heard of birds adopting an unrelated baby, but hopefully this works for you.

Sidenote: ALWAYS wash your hand thoroughly after handling wild birds. They don't just carry viruses and bacteria, but also lice, mites, and other creepy crawlies. So be careful!
