I have a question about box turtles

My boyfriend isn't really into reptiles, but when he was a little kid his parents got him a box turtle. They don't know exactly what kind of box turtle he is. I tried looking it up and he doesn't really look like any of them. They were told he's a North American Box turtle and when I look it up it comes up with Eastern box turtle but that doesn't look like him. Would different types breed to make a hybrid?

I don't have any experience with box turtles, but do you have a picture?
Turtle shells get dull as they grow up, so that might be a factor.

He probly is an Eastern box turtle then and just duller than the internet photos. He's over 20 years old.

I'd guess eastern too. But I have heard that they can interbreed to make hybrids. Someone at www.tortoiseforum.org would know if you want to be sure.
