I never find anything

There are 64 acres of woods behind my house. There is a trail that no one ever goes down but me. I take my camera everytime but never see anything. I overturn rocks, logs, search in hollow places.....I always make sure to be extra quiet. Why don't I ever see anything. Well I saw a Texas Rat Snake once but it was too fast to get a pic.

64 acres?!?!? Wow! That's amazing. In Massachusetts, that'd be swallowed up to make condos, town homes & another strip mall.

Maybe you need to make more noise & rustle them up. What kinds of critters should you come across?

poison, poison & more poison! Yikes. There's only 1 place in Eastern MA to go find a poisonous snake, up on Blue Hills Reservation. I still wish you luck in your herping adventures.

Christine......you mentioned a pond, Take a couple of small pieces of wood and lay them down flat around the pond.....not touching the water but a few feet away. If you do not have alot of natural cover for snakes then give them some artificial cover. Lay out anything tin wood plastic (black) and such....It may take some time but they will come to use it.

Well my uncles are back there moving a small tree that fell....do you think it would be ok to cut it in half with a chainsaw and lay that down?

I would try anything. I love tin as it will heat up early in the day and the snakes will use it early in the day for thermoregulate. Not sure how well the tree would work.
