My friend gave me his gecko last week because he didnt want it anymore. I took a look at the gecko and I thought that she looked kind of weird. She has a very big stomach and a small tail :main_huh:. She doesnt eat much, but she is very alert, but she is only active when I hold her. The rest of the time she is sleeping. I dont know what to do???

Thanks for any advice!

I have searched the forums and I found out that she might be impacted. I already gave her a warm bath ,about 95 degrees, and she went poop. Is there anything else I can do. One of my family members suggested using the tiniest bit of childrens laxatives??? I dont know if that would destroy the little geckos intestines and stomach. Maybe mineral oil is the best way to go???

Sorry for the double post

If the gecko pooped, it is probably not impacted. Don't give a laxative to geckos... a small amount of mineral oil is a better choice.

If the gecko's tail is skinny and it's tummy is fat, it could have parasites. Take a stool sample to a vet for examination.

In the meantime, make sure she has belly heat at around 92 degrees to help her digestion.

Couldn't she also be carrying eggs?

Their stomachs don't get that big when they are carrying eggs. Not that it isn't possible, but there's a better chance she's got parasites. If she were eggbound she wouldn't poop. Definitely need a stool sample and schedule a vet visit in the meantime.

I didn't know their stomachs got fat when they had parasites i thought they stopped eating or lost weight or a combination of the two.

The parasite multiply and therefor take up space in the stomach. They feed off the food that the gecko ingests and not much gets through to the geckos system. When this happens the leo starts feeding off it's fat reserves, thus a thinning tail with a fat belly. When the stomach gets big like that they call it a super infection or something like that.

But to tell you guys the truth, I dont think it is parasites because I see every day her stomach goes down. Not alot, just alittle.
