I could use a little input...(I apologize in advance for the book I’m about to write. lol...)
I am taking care of my boyfriend’s pregnant gecko, Willie. I’m rather new to this. We’re not exactly sure when she bred with the male. They did share a large aquarium, but there was a divider separating them. We have no clue how they each got through, but one day she was on his side, and he was on her side, so we didn’t know anything had happened until it became very obvious she was gravid. She has seemed to do very well, and she had a very healthy appetite. Due to my boyfriend’s living situation (long story), we did have to move her to my apartment. I know that it’s not wise to move a pregnant gecko, but we felt it was for the best. I have setup an incubator and a container with Hatchrite for the eggs. Everything is ready to go...81 degrees, perfect humidity...etc etc.
I am getting worried that she may possibly be egg bound. It’s been somewhere between 5 and 6 weeks since she was with the male. She ate healthily for a few days after she came home with me. She has access to calcium, and I’ve seen her licking some of it. I put moss in her moist house for her to lay the eggs in, and I try to mist it once a day. I even added a second container of moss on the opposite side of the tank. The temps haven’t really changed from where she was previously. She did go into her moist house last Saturday to shed. Sunday was the last day she ate anything, but she has was went potty throughout the week. I gave her a warm bath last night, but she didn’t seem to like it.
She doesn’t seem distressed. I know she moves around at night when the lights are out. During the day she lays on the warmest part of her aquarium warming her belly. I haven’t really seen her dig much, but I know she has at least a little bit. Mostly she just seems to rest. Seeing as how I’m new to this, I don’t know if this is normal behavior. I called a herp vet yesterday, and he said to give her a few more days and if nothing, then to bring her in. I live in the sticks, so it’s a good 80 miles to this vet. I’m worried that drive would stress her out too much.
Should I be worried, or does any of this seem normal? I’d really appreciate any help/input you guys can offer. Thanks!
