hey guys, this may sound like a silly question so forgive me if u think so but in summer months when the weather is nice and warm, is it ok to take a leo out into the garden to have a play around in the grass? the main reason i ask it because i have a corn snake and on another forum i have been advised this isnt a good idea for her, so would this be the same for a leo? :S

thanks Daman

its fine as long as 1) WATCH the gecko at ALL TIMES! 2) DON'T let the gecko eat ANYTHING

^__^ I do it all the time my geckos love being outside.

My Leo's love to go outside. The grass, being pokey at the end, irritates them though.
I put them on the driveway and keep my hand close to them incase anything happens.

Just watch out for birds!

Out of curiousity, why is it bad to let a Corn go outside?

Heheheh... unless you put chemicals in your grass or garden, there's no reason at all that you can't bring your corn snake outside and take a few pics of it in the grass. I just wouldn't let it get out of reach at all, or let it feel like it's got all the freedom in the world. (it can/will find a way to get away from you and take off if you're not careful).

So far as the geckos go, I'd suggest the same thing... so long as you don't fertilize, or use pesticides in your lawn/garden... it'd be just fine to let it roam around if you wanted. Just keep your eyes glued on it, and don't let it eat anything.

Whoever told you a corn can't go outside is nuts :p there's plenty of keepers/breeders that keep them outside all year long in FL and even GA if you're south enough.

Sry to post back to back... but that whole "don't bring your corn snake outside" kinda bugged me lol....

I bred them back when they were elaphe gutatta gutatta... They're a NATIVE species to the US... Why, and who... would tell you that you shouldn't/can't bring it outside.....

Why are there so many keepers that are that oblivious?

If you, or your family fertilize the lawn with chems, or use pesticides (grub killer, seVin dust on tomato plants in the garden... etc)... then no, I wouldn't let it wander around and take some pictures.....

But someone has instilled in you (a young keeper) that you can't take it out with you to get a breath of fresh air???

I bring my pythons outside in the summer when it's a decent day... but I can't let em go in the grass because of the pesticides/chemicals that they put in the lawn in my condo complex. I just bring em out in the summer cuz the kids like to see em, and they don't mind seeing the kids. It's a nice EDUCATIONAL thing for them, as most people (yeah, believe it or not, MOST people are afraid of snakes of any kind/size)...

Sorry to backtoback post... but that annoyed me :p. If you fertilize and pesticize your lawn, then don't bring it out.... but other than that, there's no reason (if you're responsible about it) to not.

i think the main reason ive been told it because im from the Uk and we dont realy get a summer over here anymore so its always cold lol, but i thought exactly the same thing as you told me when i ask, the bottom line is they are wild animals so why not be alowed outside? i think it is a good thing to give them a bit of fresh air but only if the temp is right which here.. is about one day in a year lol

anyway thanks for your information, i think its good to get info from different people rather than just taking one persons opinion as law, there are so many different ways people keep their reps and i made the mistake of taking one persons opinion rather than a wider range.
